Sounds like one of three things. Either the cable itself broke, the
mechanism where it attaches to the shifter broke, or where it attaches
to teh trans broke. I'd guess either in the shifter or the cable, but
if you have ramps the trans might be the easiest place to check.

I went out this morning and started her up and went to leave and gently but firmly pulled back on the gear lever and it gave way... Now it's free to move and the car is stuck in park. The brake release still works so I have to put my foot on the brake but it still doesn't make the gear change..(since I know that's up near the lever itself anyway). I'm sure I broke something but where do I start... It's cold and snowy and I am looking for a guess so I'm not freezing myself to death out there looking for it (most likely in the dark since I usually work during the day)
