The main power cable to the starter is heavy enough it may be difficult to
avoid having it touch other metal in the area. Disconnecting the battery
is a valid precaution.

Subject: Starter Motor Installation
Hi all,
I've read in the Bosch instruction booklet concerning the installation of a
Bosch starter motor that the negative cable must be disconnected from the
battery before de-installing the old starter motor or else damage to the
electrical system of car may occur. True? As far as I know as long as the
heaviest cable to end of solenoid does not touch anything on the car the car
should be OK.
According to instruction booklet I should fill out the Bosch Ultimate
Protection Plan within 7 days of buying starter motor and mail away to Auto
Road Service Inc. Sherman Oaks, California. Mail-away card states there is a
24 hr roadside assistance. I am anyway a member of CAA which includes up to
200 km tow without extra charge.
I was told by my mechanic that the starter motor did not sound well when he
cranked the car on. I bought the starter motor as a safety measure to have
it ready. I might even install it myself if the weather is mild enough.
