Update on HELP Electrical Issue

I'm pretty sure there was a recall on the switches.  My friend with a 97 A4
2.8 was having issues with the key not returning to run position and they
were putting off taking it in and then got the recall notice.  That was last
year I think.

Well, it goes like this.... did what Robert suggested to no avail, replaced
all fuses that were affected, to no avail.  Drove over to Parktown Imports
(STL) this morning (815), I was down there enjoying the weekend with the
girlfriend who lives in NY.  Pulled in, no appointment- shop was fairly
quiet (surprised!), and went right up to the service desk.  Service writer
got the details of the car (VIN, license plate, miles, etc).  Technician
clocks in behind writer.  Writer asks if I am going to wait- yes.  Explain
problem to tech, he jumps into car, pulls it into his bay, immediately
begins working on it.  1/2 hour later- ignition switch is shot, has part
BUT...the harness is somewhat fried.  It got a bit loose, and must have
shorted somewhere.  Here comes the good part.  He has the switch, but the
harness is in O'Fallon IL a good hour away, but no guarantees it will fit
switch.  They decide to order from Audi, and have it the next day.  I
explain I have to be at work a good 3 hours away.  No problem, they give me
a loaner, a 2010 A3 TDi clean diesel with six-speed sporttronic, S-line, and
*PADDLE SHIFTERS*!  The damn thing is quick, too bad it only had 90 miles on
it, and it was red, beginning of the month, and the Staties are hungry for
revenue.  So, I could not stretch its legs.  I had it up to 80 and the chime
clanged, stating that I am exceeding max speed (dealer must have set it).
Now, if this could come in an A4 with quattro, and a six-speed manual...

I am amazed how I got a loaner, especially with a 12 year old car...
