Some guesses:

-some people really want TDIs, and AoA probably wants to help A3 sales
-maybe they did some market research and found that TDI nuts were most
willing to buy an A3
-you don't drop this big a change on your bread and butter (A4) first
(need time to iron out kinks, get dealer techs trained, etc.)
-you put the engine in your lightest car so passengers and
test-drivers are really wowed (if you're gunning for TDI "brand"
development)

I echo the sentiment. I said when they did that, I'd buy one. Well, I
never said I'd buy one *new*. Now I know what to go looking for in a
few years.

Gah, Germans...I had to hunt around on the site for the mileage, which
should be front and center. 30/34/42, if anyone else is curious.
MUCH better than the 2.0TFSI, which is 21/24/28. About 16mpg more
than the VR on the highway (OH NOES, VOLVO TALK), though there is a
huge difference in body size.

PS:I miss my 200q20v (OH NOES, 200Q20V TALK.)
