It has an oil cooler sandwiched between the oil filter cartridge and the mounting on the block, It's blown the sealing ring between the cooler and block and I'm trying to establish the part number and, to be honest whether I can get away with using a sealing ring from a filter cartridge itself as it looks similar in dimension.

Forget the seal that comes on the filter. Wrong profile, too thick.
The replacement seal is readily available from any VW dealer, and most
shops that work on later VWs should have it in stock. I know I sell a
ton of 'em. 038 117 070A, lists for just under 4 bucks. Has a couple
of little tabs to hold it in place while you reinstall the cooler. I
remove the pipe with an internal pipe wrench, lower the cooler, install
the seal, and put it all back in place. Be sure to tighten the center
nut adequately. John
