Hi Keith,

My car has the same setup as yours, back of the block to lower pipe, heater
valve to the upper pipe, but ETKA (8-19, 72-00) shows the opposite ! 

So, if water flows from the block to the core through that lower pipe, then
air should be forced out of the core via the upper pipe even if it is angled
downward a bit.

Puzzling...

I'm sure you have checked this, and it might not make much difference anyway

but have you connected the the heater hoses to the correct inlet/outlet 
pipes of the heater core? Not sure it would make a huge difference but worth

checking.
On mine the pipe from the back of the block goes to the lower of the heater 
core pipes.
Just a thought
