wayyy too simple an explanation.  i am now working for a very very large and
successful 'merican company.  one that is admired and very profitable.  fact
is it is highly dysfunctional and has removed almost all of what i would
call good management culture.  innovation simply doesn't occur unless it
comes from the labs in the states.  good ideas are left in people's heads
because it is all too hard.  hell i have to get my boss 4 (yes four) levels
above me to approve $200 air travel...

interestingly enough, i believe this is also part of the toyota issue.
focus on cost reduction and removal of management from the customer
interface.  excessively cost-driven companies will not survive because the
products will disappear, as will the customers.  can anyone tell me a single
toyota drivers car of the last 5 years (under $300K)?
