chances are, as you suggest a break in the wiring. if you remove the lhs
carpet and the panel cover, then the lower "a" panel kick panel, and the
dash panel, you should be able to see the passage of the wires - leave the
"a" pillar.  then check the wires (i haven't got elsawin with me to confirm
the wire) - highly likely that the wire has broken where it kinks around the
hinge.  pulling a new wire would be better than trying to solder the old
one.
