One thing I use as an alternative to suction cups on the windshield is a
square bean bag filled with something heavy (lead shot?).  There's a solid
plastic plate you attach the suction cup to and you set the whole thing on
top of the dash.  The bottom is sticky, so it can't slide around.  you can
move it car to car, and it doesn't leave a tell tale ring on your
windshield.  Its about $19 at Fry's or for $29.99 you can get the Garmin
accessory which does the same thing.
