Tom,
It is doable, albiet with difficulty if one wants to retain the AC.
See MC-1 swap into '83 GTC and details including install of AC:
http://www.gtquattro.com/GTCTurbo.html this link should have everything you need to
know regarding the swap. The big trick is to use AC and Bracketry from Ur Quattro.
There is also a special bracket (2Bennett?) available that hangs alt below that as well
for install of longer intercooler in factory location. This swap entailed a home grown
intercooler setup - bucktooth style behind bumper.
BTW, I still have complete Ur Quattro engine with everything needed to swap into 4000Q
or CGT $1000 includes all the parts, incl. Turbo, oil cooler, manifolds. CIS, Alum.
Airbox and igloo, intercooler, sensors, ECU and wiring - all things that make the swap
feasible without custom fabrication. Certainly worth these parts even if you don't want
the engine! I wish I had these when I did the swap above.
Also, it is possible to do an AUDI V8 without too much trouble. Needs special mounts,
etc. but can be a pretty sick conversion.
I recommend doing the MC-1 or other I5. Affordable, and not to difficult to install.
Plenty of power!
Ben

I have been looking at the '82 Coupe I have in the barn and been thinking.
It really needs more power and the only engine swap I have heard of is a turbo motor
from a 5000. I don't like that one because it always seems to lose the A/C. What I am
wondering about is either a 1.8T, or a Chevy 5 cylinder. The latter only because an
adapter to Audi is available.
Has anyone seen a conversion that "worked", besides the 5K?

... not sure why the A/C compressor enters so significantly into the equation
Well, almost all of the write ups I have seen were for 10V turbos, they all mention
tossing the A/C. I assume there must be some interference. As I think about it, most of
those swaps were 4KQ's. They weren't designed for a 5 cyl and that may be the problem.]
