why we drive old cars (was Toyota UA-LAC)

Just lately I was thinking of getting a newer car, maybe cutting down on
maintenance issues.

The fleet has been the same for a while;

'73 Daimler Sovereign (read Jag xj6 series one ) - 22years of ownership
'87 CGT (13 years owned)
'88 type $$ (9 years)

I've never had any of them in for repairs cos I can do it all at home

A year ago I bought wifey a '97 318 touring beemer, nice car, but the rear
NS door lock goes kaput as far as central locking and can only be unlocked
manually. THEN it goes toyally - i.e. no way to open the door. I take it to
the beemer specialist who cleverly manages to get the door panel off with
the door shut, but says " I couldn't get to the lock mechanism, - there used
to be a separate lock housing and locking solenoid , but this is all one
unit. Better try and get a second hand door ready 'cos the only way this is
coming open is after you;ve attacked it with a 9" angle grinder".

IS this the future ? I'm thinking I won't be buying that recent 530d I was
looking at, and may just stick with the old iron. I knew there was a reason
I kept all these old motors.

Cheers Rob (knows nothing about jet engines ;)
