1988 90Q sunroof issue

The sunroof on my 91 90Q did something similar. It required me pulling
the cover off the switch panel and manually putting the sunroof to the
neutral position between tilt & retract. Once that was done, it would
somehow remember that position and stop as expected between the two
functions.
As far as it not closing all the way, is it hanging up on the factory
wind deflector arms? The roof panel is supposed to glide over them and
that retracts the deflector. If it hits them rather than glide over
them it will fail to close all the way.
