Air Bag Spiral Spring

I just removed my first air bag steering wheel over the weekend and did not
find it necessary to remove the spiral spring.  It stayed on the wheel when
it came out.  This is on a 91 200 Avant so it should be representative on at
least one of your vehicles.

Having taken off the steering wheel in my late '91 CQ and early '91 100q, I
noticed all is pretty much the same with the air bag except the "spiral
spring" in the 100 is replaced by a different wire in the CQ that also plugs
into the center of the airbag.

Everytime I remove the steering wheel, the spiral spring removal is the
nuisance part. Has anyone changed the "spiral spring" with a wire from a
later car and not have the airbag blow up on them?
