Thinking about an allroad

I have always been an old school kind of guy. I loved my 4ktq and the C4
Avant I briefly had. I have been half looking for another of one of those
until earlier this week. My wife were on our way to a nice restaurant a
little way out in the country and were one of the first on the scene of an
accident. One car had a mom and her 8 year old daughter. They were both in
rough shape and had to be taken out by helicopter. Having a 6 and 4 year
old this hit home pretty hard. They car was an older civic of the same
generation of my wife's CRX which is my current daily driver.

So I have concluded I want my next car to be a bit more modern for added
safety bits. I have always lusted after a 95.5 S6 Avant and it looks like
the allroad is the only thing even close in Audi's more recent offerings.
It looks like manual drive cars are pretty rare, especially here in the
mid Atlantic. I have done a little searching of the archives. It sounds
like the automatic has some problems and the 2.7tt has its own special
considerations. Other than that and the air suspension are there things I
should be looking for especially?

I also noticed a few references to euro models (and maybe Canadian) having a
low range on the six speed. Does anyone know anything about this? If
anyone knows of any technical information on this on the web I would love to
get a link. I am very curious how they implemented this.

Thanks!
Eric
