If the tool isn't engaging on one side, your only option is to pull the
console. Once you pull the switches and the A/C controller, you can reach in
and unplug the radio connectors so that you can pull everything.
BTDT on one of my cars when one of the releases got fouled. Not as easy as
just pulling it out the front, but not the end of the world either.
