Hi Jim,
I may be offside here, but the undercoat/primer is what will allow the paint
to best adhere to the metal.... trying to spray on metal without
prep/undercoat will yield flaking away of your new paintjob in short
order...
others chime in if I've mis-interpreted. As for 'undercoating' being for
the rustbelt..that is a different type of undercoat vs the primer/undercoat
I think Huw is indicating.
