transmission limp mode, reading codes

Hi. Today my automatic transmission suddenly went to limp mode (2nd and 3rd 
gear only). It's a 4-speed AEK (097) with "sport" button. I believe the first 
step is to hook up code reader and see what's going on. If I get a generic 
OBDII-USB cable and K/L adapter for old school Audi connectors, will it talk 
to this gearbox? If not, what else can read it, except original VAG scanner?
