Hey, new to the list, opening with alternator question...

I recall having to drill out the rivets holding a plate which retains the
bearing. Wish I had taken photos now! You also need to use a puller to
pull the bearing off the shaft. New H/W I got from the hardware store,
didn't both with stainless as I figure the next time it needs a rebuild it
(or the car) will be scrap. You can place a diode "inline" on the VR ground
to get another 0.6V of voltage out of a regular VR.

The link I found handy: http://www.detomaso.nu/~thomast/alternator/

Cheers

Subject: Hey, new to the list, opening with alternator question...

So, I have been trying to rebuild my Audi V8's alternator. Its a real
blast. Came accross this writeup, still working through it.
http://www.humanspeakers.com/audi/alternator.htm

Pretty good stuff. I still can't seem to get the center section out of
mine, I'm sort of lost as to why. I'm talking about the rotor in it. I've
got new bearings (actually one extra for some reason) and a new Voltage
regulator as well.

I also will be needing some new hardware in certain areas, a few of the old
screws were pretty brittle and snapped. Got to love aluminum and steel
working together with road salt..

So, he mentioned in his write-up an "avi Meron" whom sourced a VR that has a
better voltage output than the oe unit, this information would be usefull if
it does indeed apply to the V8's alternator, which I think is the higher
140amp unit that was also avail. on the URS4s. Not sure, though.

Thanks, all.
Nick
