'07 A3 2.0t Oil Consumption

The '08 is driven almost exclusively in town, and the wife never winds it
out. The original owner, who put about 18k on it, supposedly did, however,
'sport' it whenever possible on a drive to work on the order of 30 miles.
Kind of goes to the way I was told 40 years ago about how to break in a
motor; progressively increasing the revs and intensity of acceleration over
a few hundred miles. Goes back to the old 'setting the rings' thing, that
isn't supposed to be necessary anymore.

That's exactly my point. I think these engines respond better to being
driven longer, and harder, versus being babied. Prior to the trip(s) to FL,
ours was driven almost strictly around town, and that's when the knock was
the worst. It's gone now thankfully, but I was worried about it @ 6K miles,
even though it was/is under warranty.

Don't know, Wylie, but my '07 and '08 A4 2.0t's haven't burned/lost a drop,
knock on wood and begging mercy from the audi gods, even when the 300 hp '07
is wrung out on the one stretch of twisties around here. They've got about
25k and 23k on them.

Jeffrey pondered:
"Howdy,
Is there any sort of established "normal" oil consumption for the 2.0t
engine on my 2007 A3 (USA)?"

Jeff,
I guess the only question I have is how have you driven the car (I'm
assuming you've owned it since new)? Any long trips? Mostly around town? If
you're rather light on the go pedal you may have never properly seated the
rings. We had a car in the Audi dealership I worked at a few moons ago that
had basically been babied all its life and it used oil like there was a hole
in the oil pan. The rings had never been seated properly and there was
tremendous blow-by. Also, I've heard tell of there being bad cases of gunky
buildup on the backs of the valves on the FSI engines because of the lack of
fuel to wash them clean. People have added Sea-Foam (I still want to do
this) to their intake tract to clean the backs of the valves) to clean them
up. This could be the culprit in both your loud valve issue (we had it too
on our '08 Q7 3.6) and oil usage. We skimped on the grade of fuel at the
outset when it was $4/gal, but a couple of bottles of Techron, almost
exclusive use of Shell Premium fuel, and a trip to FL and back from NC cured
ours.
Maybe that helps?
