George,
This is a widely known (check the quattroworld and audiworld allroad forums) and often fear inspiring issue with the early (pre-'04 I think) allroads. There is an internal oil seal that fails and cannot be replaced separately, necessitating replacement of the entire TC. It's largely the reason we traded our '01 allroad in '08 at 120K miles in favor of the Q7. Ours did not have the fault code but I was worried that it was inevitable given the widespread nature of the problem and the failure rate of suspension components and related electronics not having given me the most assured fealing that my car was immune from issues others were experiencing in theirs. Now, if I could have convinced my wife to drive a 6-speed on a daily basis, I'd have found an allroad with one instead of going for the Q7, because I'd have gone the coilover route and not worried about the tranny or suspension.
Best of luck with it. If you plan on keeping the car I guess biting the proverbial bullet when the time comes is about all I can suggest.
