If the ignition switch is anything like the one in my '95 A6, common aftermarket
key blanks are just slightly too short to insert all the way into the
ignition, so a
key that works perfectly in the door seems to not work in the
ignition.  If this is
so with your car, you can probably cut/grind the key so it can go in
that extra mm.
