Ben,

On the subject of converting your library, you hit on one good idea,  
that is to hire a teenager to sit and feed the converter.  And MP3 is  
not the only format you can convert to, there are many options  
regarding bit rate to satisfy the most fastidious ear.  I'm an ex- 
artillery Paratrooper which cost me a good amount of hearing loss,  
and last year had several applications of a chemo called cisplatin  
which is well documented to cause hearing loss (and I took another  
big hit there too.)

iPods are ridiculously inexpensive today, and what I said about once  
you try playing digital music is serious.  You'll never want to fool  
with mechanical players again.  I use a 5 year old mac laptop for  
that purpose only, they are readily available reasonably on the used/ 
reconditioned market and well worth the cost.  Probably any PC laptop  
with a 2 ghz cpu would do the job too and they are also available  
dirt cheap.
