Your guess is pretty much the same as mine. Since the motor is submerged,  
and sealed, I haven't been anxious to get at it. However, If it went  
together, it has to come apart. Since this is a $1200 commercial machine which I  
picked up at an auction for about 10 cents on the dollar, I doubt I want to 
hear  the price of a new pump. With luck the problem will be in the power 
cord from  which it is suspended.

My guess is that since the pump has been hanging from  the power cord the
wires have broken inside the cord and you have an  intermittent open/short.
You may have to take it apart and shorten or  replace the cord. You should 
be
able to verify with a multimeter. Good  luck!
