Sadly predictable. It's "never" the fuel pump...

I remember thinking it odd that you put new plugs and wires in but
idn't mention the cap and rotor. Glad you found it, anyway!
Think the last time I did a Bosch cap and rotor it was under $25 for
oth parts.

I have to disagree on the fuel pump never being the problem... I had mine go out on my 95 A6q 5-speed, and replacing the plugs, wires, professionally cleaned injectors and cam sensor (similar effect to the distributor). Funny thing was, all of these replacements helped for about a day each, then the car would take 2 or 3 key turns to start.
The new fuel pump has it firing up on twist number one! But, at 250k miles, I can justify all the other parts as a much needed tune up / preventive maintenance.
I do wish, however, that I followed my own limited diagnostic skills and narrowed down the problem first.
Even with the shotgun approach, I like to try the cheapest / most likely component first, then work my way up to impending bankruptcy..
