Also, the primary wiring on all of the old VAG products is total junk.  Battery to starter to alternator as well as battery and engine ground straps.

cgt with battery under hood, ground wire goes from battery to crappy 
"chassis" ground on side of batt compartment to transmission bolt. 
Check and clean all.
