What was the Verdict on the Intermittent "Check Engine Light" Problem

I recall reading many postings years ago concerning the 'check engine light' on the type 44's (late 80's to mid 90's?) coming on intermittently, and the cause was usually the oxygen sensor.  

Was the consensus that 
a.) the oxygen sensors were failure prone and just needed to be replaced frequently or 
b). the check engine lights/O2 sensors were overly sensitive and would flash on with small atmospheric changes or
c.) something else
