Dan,
I just had nearly the same thing in my '95 A6q. my C-Pillar trim had come
undone and I noticed water dripping down from the roof area, so it was a
pretty simple diagnosis.
The drain tube on my car exits behind the rear wheel and is hidden by the
bumper cover. If yours is similar, there is a soft rubber boot at the end
of the drain tube that "pinches" to prevent insect from climbing up the
drain tube. This is also where any dirt washed from above gets trapped.
I squeezed that pinch boot to open the drain hole and a bunch of muddy
organic matter and water flowed through.
I followed pretty much the same cleaning procedure for my AC drain tube
earlier this summer.
