Not to steal a sale for Mark ;-), but there are a number of guys on the Motorgeek forum that have made the URs4 and B5S4 shifters work with 01E transmissions, without resorting to the expense of sourcing either an 01e S2 or RS2 linkage.
I understand your current issue is with the shifter ball and Mark's shifter should resolve that
