NAC VW Eurovan Camper top question

It's been a while since I've looked closely at the EV poptops, so I hope
this is not all a lie. The hydraulic struts on those tops had a plastic
piece that would snap in place as the strut got to its fully extended
length. This plastic bit kept the strut from collapsing due to any extra
weight on the top or, presumably, a weakened, aged strut. This piece was
part of the strut assembly, so I have to wonder if that is why they are so
proud of them. I have seen vanagon drivers use pieces of PVC pipe, small
diameter, cut them to the length of the inner shaft on the strut, cut a slit
down the length of the pvc and use it as a brace on their rear hatches. Or
keep using your 2x4's, so long as they don't bonk you on the head if they
fall.

What I was trying to understand is if that is in fact all that holds
the top up? I have a new (aftermarket) set in there right now, and
it's still nearly inpossible to lift the top. They are stronger than
the OEM original set that I pulled out of there, though. Is there
nothing else that lifts or holds the top other than those lift struts?

If that's the case, I guess he will have to pay for the OEM ones. Yikes!!

Tony
