Steve, 

That noise may come from a weak reservoir cap, or a leak. In fact, the cap
must keep enough pressure to raise the boiling point of the coolant. This is
important since there is some hot spots in the cylinder head where the temps
are higher than boiling point. If you remove the reservoir cap slowly when
the engine is hot and release pressure, you'll hear water boiling in the
head and coolant rushing in the small hose that goes to the reservoir. Scary
noise...
