concert radio timeout

A few weeks ago the battery in my A4 died, taking with it the radio
security code. I went on-line to Langan Audi East (Latham NY) to see
if I could get a code. I haven't heard back from them yet. I crossed
them off the list. I tried the new Quirk VW in Manchester NH. They
were nice and helpful, but couldn't get a code for an Audi. Strike 2.
Then I tried Audi of Nashua NH. The parts guy got one of the techs to
run the number (I gave him the radio and my registration which had the
VIN). No charge! That's a Plus in my book.
So the Question of the Day is, after 2 or 3 failures of entering the
security code, the radio has to be on for 1 hour. Is that 1 hour
without shutting it off? Or can the 1 hour be 10 minutes at a time?
I think I have an hour's worth of on-and-off time, but I can't yet
get it past SAFE mode yet.
On another note, I was thinking I may replace the radio rather than
put up with safe modes and security codes. I bought 20 pins that I
can crimp onto an after market radio harness and which will plug
into the appropriate slots on the Audi OEM harness. Part number
N-103-361-05, 30 cents each plus $3 shipping for a total of $9. I
got them in a few days from 1stVWParts.com. Another recommendation.
