My two bits - I've been driving an AllRoad with Cooper CS4's in the V
rating (225/55 17). Amazing thing is they have a 60,000 mile
warranty. I've only been getting 20, but get a new set every fall on
warranty for $225 for the set (just got the 3rd set last week) and
they get around very well and stop surprisingly well. All seasons
make some sense in Montana as you never know what the hell the
weather will be. I have had quattros since '92 and seen lots of snow
and ice. No problem with all seasons, as long as you start the winter
with fairly new tread.

I have always heard that statement as conventional wisdom regarding
"all season" tires. It used to be true. No longer. The Nokian WR G2
is not cheap, but excellent in the snow, and _very_ good in the wet
and dry. I would recommend them for any car needing a year round
solution.
Tire compound technology combined with siping has come a long way in
the last few years.
