Need to wire up a CEL

Hey Tony,

Frank (aka Katman) squared me away on what I need to accomplish.

Kostal pin#11 (or ECU pin #31) wire gets spliced to 2 lines. 1 line goes to the negative wire for the bulb I'll be using for the CEL in the cluster, the other line goes to a trigger button (or relay holder) and then to ground. The positive side of the CEL bulb is connected to a triggered +12v from ignition (so, I will be splicing my +12v feed from the seat belt warning light). The code sequence is flashed from the ground side after you have "triggered" the ECU to spit the codes from the fuse holder (or trigger button).

I was confused in not understanding that 2 leads come from the Pin 11/ pin 31 (depending). I was thinking that pin 11 connection had an in-line fuse holder to trigger codes, but then I wasnt understanding what would blink the codes if the fuse is removed from the trigger line (as at that point, its no longer grounded). I now understand and will be tackling wiring up the CEL with the Ur-q cluster swap planned this weekend.

Thanks for the help!

Pin 31 of the ECU, yellow wire. That is the one that powers the light, which is refered to as the "knock sensor light" in the Bentley. it goes through the Kostal connector T14c/pin 11, which may be the same one you are refering to.

for some reason in the manual it is shown to have power with the FP Relay on, but of course is not powered unless the terminals are jumpered.

Hey folks,

I need to wire up a check engine light for my 84 4000 turbo convert (MC1 Mac11 I believe), but have absolutely no light right now at all. I'll be doing this one from scratch. I understand Pin 11 on my kostal connector is the trigger wire to start the code sequence which I connect to a BUS fuse holder (or trigger) and the ground side of my CEL light bulb in the cluster. Here's the kicker, without having the check engine light in place now, I'm not sure where the positive line of the bulb runs to for the codes to stream from (ECU? Other sensor? what color wire would it be?).

I checked the fuseblock which no longer houses the fuel pump relay... cant seem to locate that either. I need to dig in to this wiring and track it all down.

Insight appreciated!
