A more general TDI set of questions (was: [urq] Future Audi : is there a TDI planned ?)

Speaking of TDI, I've been contemplating a TDI a3 or Golf for a while now,
and one of the things that concerns me is how easy it is to find
knowledgeable mechanics on this engine. In the US, the TDIs are availabe in
a few different products, but they are certainly not selling like hotcakes,
so you have to wonder how much training a dealership, for example, is going
to invest in training their mechanics on these engines. Anyone have any
thoughts on this? Does VAG enforce a certain minimum amount of training on
their dealers?

Similarly, there are a few VAG specific independant garages in my area, but,
again, are they going to have much/any experience in diagnosing or
repairinga diesel?

Finally, I have read some horror story sites on major defects in the current
TDI in the A3/golf/etc and was wondering if anyone could speak to this?
Seems to be something related to the injection pump being very sensitive and
prone to failure leading to big repair bills...

Thanks,
