In this example, you can't.  That is to say, on a base jetta you cannot add
certain options - they are available ONLY in the other trims.

Without remembering specifics, buying a jetta TDI is basically like adding
the TDI engine to the top level trim SEL jetta as opposed to adding the TDI
engine to a base Jetta.  The price is futher justified in that the TDI trim
also comes standard with certain options like the touch screen audio and
maybe xenon lights, can't remember.  So if the price difference between a
jetta TDI and an SEL is $2000 some of it is the engine and the rest is the
standard options.

So if you were planning to buy an SEL, it makes more financial sense to
consider the TDI vs if you were considering the base jetta since that is a
whole other car (extra crappy 4 banger, zero options, ugly fabric, etc)
