The shim and handle/door-lock pull is the best way to get into a type44/v8. The best chance of a building a key profile by 'matching' lock cylinder (with the factory key numbers in it) will come from the passengers side of the car. IME the drivers side lock cylinders rarely have the factory key codes still in them.
To the 'myths' of locksmithing, what can work on disc-type locks (ala type 44/v8) is 'bumping' a key that is close in profile, especially if the discs are well worn. For the novice, it can be a frustrating experience, and even a pro won't spend a lot of time using that method. The shim and rod is the more common practice.

Kent, I've had to get into a V8 and several 5000's, and here's what I do. Take an old fassioned coat hangar (metal) and straighten it out. Then, put about a 1/2" 90 degree bend in it. Get a small shim if you can, that will also make the job easier.
Now, slide the shim in between the side window and the seal, on the outside of the window. You will want to do this on the passenger side, I use the rear door for ease. However, you can get into the front as well. You will put the shim toward the rear, as you are going to be "feeling" for the latch. Basically, on the Latch there is a spot where the lock hooks into it. You will sort of move your coat hangar around till you see the lock knob move up and down. Then, it will be a matter of getting somewhat firm under it, and pull up.
Ichecked myu pics but don't have any of those latches. However, if you still need one later, I'll pull it off my car and snap a quick pic.
HTH,
Tony
