Dennis,
A bad synchro will not do its job of slowing the upcoming gear, hence the
"crunching" noise on fast upshifts. Also, on the opposite, a sticky synchro
would not let a gear go and then keep the tranny in a fixed gear for a while
(similar to a bad clutch that won't disengage fully : the lever would not
move from its position).
So, I my experience, you either have a bad engine mount that let the
drivetrain move too much on decel, or the little "ball and spring" assembly
that should lock the gear ration in place is weak. Second gear is often, if
not always, the first one to go.

It is beginning to look like the Audi 5 speed manual box synchros live
about 27-28 years.
A good friend has had an issue and recently found 3 possible donors all with
bad synchros, and not always the same gear.
Mine has just recently started to jump out of second gear after downshift on
decel. It never acts up or resists engaging on upshift or acceleration. Only
on downshift and decel.
Is that a synchro issue or something else? I've not had any experience with
this type of anomaly.
Life with old cars - never a dull moment.
