No differential likes to be continually "active", especially under a load.
Mismatched tires will slowly destroy them. Some transfer cases (like
mine used to) incorporate diffs and are "AWD", though most don't and are
"4WD". Yes, my truck was originally AWD, but people used to add locking
hubs and replace the diff with a kit to "eliminate" it for fuel economy
and less rolling noise.
