S6 Avant Sport Seat Extender - stuckage

I have S6 seats in my 93 V8 and one of those seemed to be stuck out once.  I
admit to moments of barbarianism in which I am not at all analytical,
instead opting for brute force.  In this case, the results were positive.
The extended piece returned to it's unextended position and has not become
stuck again.  It does however move in and out without much effort now, but I
believe it did so before as well.

Well - the new to me Avant is almost ready for service.

 

The driver's side sport seat extender (depth adjuster) is stuck all the way
extended. Being an Italian family, this feature will not be used. I tinkered
with it a bit last night, noted that there is a metal rod extending between
the adjuster rails that have plastic gears at each end. I could get those to
move slightly, laterally, but it made no difference.

 

In playing with the passenger side, there seem to be various locking
positions - I suspect this is what is affecting the driver's side. What
engages the lock? And how do I disengage that?
