Audi on a budget...?

Hey All,

I'm thinking about buying my first Audi. My last car was a Saab 9000
Aero which I really liked: versatile, efficient, and fun to drive.
Unfortunately, it died, and I don't fancy the newer Saabs. I've always
admired Audis, so I'm thinking about a switch.

I'm looking for something practical, elegant, and fun, preferably with
a manual transmission for less than $6000. I figure my best bet would
be to find a well cared for A4 or S6 from the 90s.

I read Igor Kessel's "long and boring" post about the A4 vs. the S6,
and they both sounded pretty good, but that post was from 99, so
perhaps people's opinions have changed, prices have shifted, or newer
models have entered the picture.
