solar charger hook-up

I would recommend putting a diode 12V on the positive lead. The diode is
usually marked with a symbol like this >| or one end darkened. This end
should point to the battery. What it does, is stop any current from going
from the battery to the solar panel.
Part number would be 1N4742 or 1N4742A.
I use this setup with a 9V battery on one end and an accessory plug on the
other. When I need to disconnect the battery, I plug this setup into the
"lighter". The nine volts supplies power to save your radio memory and for
the ECU.

The only switched lighters I've seen are the ones on the back of the center
console on the V8 ... which is switched by the switch on the driver's door
armrest that disabled the window switches on the rear door armrests.
I also have a solar battery maintainer, which works great on the urq (and
the V8 too) plugged into the lighter on the dash. If you think about it
that's precisely the way the factory uses them on the new cars ...
I don't see any value in adding a separate connector for the solar charger.
Now adding jump posts on the urq to eliminate the need to pull the back seat
is something I'd consider.

I have a similar question due to a similar self-treat....
This is for the urq however... I don't think the cigarette lighter will work
unless the ignition is on, so I figured the charging function won't work
either.
I surmise that I might have to do a bit of "custom" wiring but haven't
pursued it further due to the weather (simpleton trial-and-error testing).

I treated myself to a solar battery charger, for the 200 Avant that doesn't
get used much.

The panel came with bare leads. No problem, I'll just attach a cigarette
lighter plug to it. But... my electrical knowledge is challenged.
Do I attach the positive + output of the solar panel to the positive +
center electrode of the the lighter plug? Or should the + feed the negative
- side of the plug, to keep the electrons flowing from + to -?
It seems like a simple question, but it has me flummoxed.
