Look at a B8 (new) A4 vs a first gen A6. The entire line has moved larger so much that they need to make smaller cars to fill the spot that the A4 should be in.

I think it's a matter of "look the new A4 has 2" more leg room than the 325i" then the next year you see the ad "the new 325i has 3" more leg room than the A4" (325i just picked out of thin air btw). Rinse and repeat a few times, voila now the little guy in the Audi fleet is too big and weighs way too much.
