Bent valve symptoms

Tom,
I would like to add my own questions and testimony through personal
experience here since I haven't seen anyone else say/ask it.
What engine are you referring to?
If it's a V6 (ATQ?) then probably at least bent valves, and if memory serves
correct, usually just exhaust valves.
If it's a 1.8T you could, not likely, but could, get lucky with no damage at
all. I had 2 customers this past year ignore their service intervals, snap
belts and not clash. One was cruising down the highway, the other was at
idle. Both were severe derelicts and more fortunate than smart. Fortunately
for them I was more prudent than most seem to be and didnt tear down the
engines based on assumption. Don't get too excited though, I did at least a
dozen rebuilds last year due to valve damage ranging from new valves on
resurfaced head to complete overhaul from valve, guide, piston, bearing
damage..
If it's a 2.0T, I've not yet encountered the T-belt derelicts yet..
Don't make any assumptions, every scenario of mine has been slightly
different. Removing a valve cover and spark plugs can be very telling and in
my experience well worth the time to make an accurate diagnosis. Besides, if
it's getting re-built, they're coming off anyway.

* Groundhog Day 2011*
This year, both Groundhog Day and the State of the Union address occur on
the same day.

in which we look to a creature of little intelligence for prognostication
while the other involves a groundhog." -A.A.
