I had 2 leaks in my 1.8T this past fall - one from the coolant flange at the
pass. side rear of the engine, the other I thought
was the water pump, as it was dripping from the front driver's side of the
engine. Turns out #2 was the electronic temp
sensor, which is on the driver's side front, under the intake manifold. The
coolant was running down a hose or pipe, making
it appear to be the wp.

Main issue with 1.8's is the sludge. As long as oil changes have been performed
religiously, with the proper oil and filter
(OEM filter is really the best bet), one can avoid sludging.

Looking at seller's car. Seems like from the front of the engine.
Water pump? I am trying to find out when it was replaced. Owner
recently added Stop Leak and it appear to cure it, at least for now. I
never used it don't know if stop leak can case some damage in other
parts of the cooling system. Does anyone experienced anything like
this? Should this car be avoided? I know 5 cyl 20v runs 300k and more
with proper care, never had experience with 4 cyl 20v 1.8T, need
advice. Thanks.
