98 A4 starting issues and codes

Experts and BTDT pundits;
I need some help with a good friends car. He gave the 98 A4 2.8 auto to his son and per usual it is now acting up. For some reason, it seems Audis don't respond well to new masters. The car acts like it vapor locks when he refuels, and occasionally starts hard cold as well.
