Hydraulic fluid [Pentosin]

I believe a fairly accurate overview of what you'll find in the archives
would be that there are substitutes available from Mobil & Chevron (not sure
about Shell, but I think them too) in 5 gallon pails for bulk needs and the
more commonly available viscosity of those fluids is a little thicker than
Pentosin and therefore the steering can feel a bit heavy for a minute or
three on very cold mornings.

In my experience, Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF exhibits fairly similar viscosity
differences and I believe it has helped reduce some leaking where the rubber
is crimped down by the hose ends.

Synthetic ATF (full syn, like mobil 1) was recommended too.  I tried it in a
pinch (when away from my 5 gal pail of DTE-13M), and the Mobil 1 ATF worked
just fine.  No new leaks or squeaks. The rest of the substitutes for the
liquid gold Pento$in et. al. brands have been discussed fully on the list
over the years, it's all in the archives somewhere.
