Ben,
From what I've read here, don't go messing with the bomb until you can
verify that it is bad. Get the brakes working properly first. The bomb
has nothing to do with the brake assist when the engine is running.
Sounds to me like you might need to do a superflush of the PS/PB fluid
system.
