Removing a strut insert

Can you get at the top of it at all? If it's protruding even 1/4", you can
get a big pipe wrench on it and turn it. Once it turns a little, you are
home free. BTDT Plenty.

You can put a hole in the bottom, but you will want to fill it up, as you
need oil in the housing for the dissapation of heat from the strut.
