With the dim bulbs I'm thinking battery too, but rather than getting guesses from us, take a voltmeter to it.  

What do you measure @ the battery when cranking?  If that looks good measure @ the starter & then work between the two to find the high resistance point.  Cranking puts the most stress on the electrical system.  It may be a weak ground connection @ the battery or engine block, or a splice in the (+) battery lead (I'm not at all familiar with the A4.)

Ignition switch was replaced February 2010, starter was rebuilt November
2008.

Try the ignition switch in the steering column. Find a reputable  seller of
aftermarket. 25$ solution.
