NAC: Jetta Trunk Lid

Ok, thanks, L-A, I guess I can test this by unhooking the struts and seeing if
the trunk is still hard to open. It's getting really
ridiculous, you really have to lean on the darn thing to close it and bend at
the knees to open it!

Mark, I am quite sure the struts are OK. Maybe weak a bit, but still ok.

Dan, Mark IV Jettas and 1998-2005 Passat (same hinges) have this problem,
where the hinges themselves will bind over time. No matter what you do,
spray lube or work them for an hour, they will need replacement. This is a
very well known problem. There is even a technical bulletin on them.

I had such a car here last month (2001 Jetta with only 40k miles, my
stepmother former ride) and indeed the hinges were binding badly. The struts
were uncompressible by hand in the bench vise, even with 250 lbs of meat
helped with gravity. They were fine.

Each hinge is around 70$, as found here :

Try a google search with the part number : 3B5 827 301B and 3B5 827 302B.

Replace them. And lube the hinges with teflon spray.

My son's 2003 Jetta Wolfsburg has a very sticky trunk lid - to the point
where
you have to use a major amount of
strength to open and close it. I assume that the struts are the culprit. Is
there any adjustment/lubrication that can be done,
or do you just replace the 2 struts?
